This new academic year, I decided to offer a new extracurricular for 26 middle school students (Grade 7-9) : TED Ed Club.

What is TED Ed Club?’

TED-Ed Clubs is a flexible, school-based program that supports students in discussing, pursuing and presenting their big ideas in the form of short TED-style talks. To find out more visit

What are the goals of a TED-Ed Club?
• To stimulate and celebrate creative ideas put forth by students from all over the world.
• To work with a generation of problem solvers, critical thinkers and innovators to make the world a better place
• To connect groups of students of all different backgrounds around the world.
• To be a platform for student ideas.
• To support students in developing presentation and public speaking skills, so that their ideas can be more easily seen, understood, shared and acted upon.
• To make an idea—developed, presented and recorded by a student—a valuable reference point on a resume, college application or in a job interview.

Why Yawning is Contagious?

Another increasingly important skill set is the ability to illustrate one’s big ideas. Animation is a fantastic and fun medium for acquiring and exercising this artistic skill. TED-Ed Club members and facilitators will receive materials that support them in developing a variety of animations skills including storyboarding, character design, stop motion animation and visualizing abstract ideas.

Starting TED Ed Club at your school is a great opportunity to make transformation!

You need to apply to be TED Ed Facilitator by visiting this website After submitting your application, you need to arrange online Hangout session with TED Ed Staff for further explanation and discussion. Then, you could access TED Ed resources that you needed. All curriculum is very well prepared. You will get TED Ed Club information, release form, weekly idea book, animation, etc. It’s all you need to start TED Ed Club!

1st Week TED Ed Club “Design Your Passion”

Collaborated with Ms.Yenni Tanzino, another TED Ed Club facilitator, we started our first meeting at TED Ed Club on Thursday, August 21st 2014.

In the first meeting, we introduced TED Ed Club to the students and asked the students to make a name card that consists of their own name and three words of their passion. To make it easier, I asked them to make digital tools of their name card. Pixlr, Picmonkey, Paint, and Photoshop is cool programs for making beautiful name card. We also collected students email for their roster and distributed TED Ed Release Form to ask permission from their parents.


To make it easier to be managed,  I use schoology to manage all students assignment submission, distribute TED Ed Club resource, and blast announcement. I spent some time to teach how to use Schoology because students need to adapt to use online learning management system. Students seemed super excited to lean new things and define their own passion using digital tools. They keep questioning everything about new apps and new things! This is awesome!


2nd Week “Design Ideas Worth Spreading”

This week, I evaluated students name card submission in front of class. I gave praises, comments and evaluation about how to design their name card beautifully and effectively using digital tools. Students also gave their opinion about their passion and designing technique. I also gave them the opportunity to improve their name card afterwards.

Next, we entered the second week materials of TED Ed Club and we designed what are the characteristics of great ideas/ideas worth spreading. I gave them examples of my own characteristics of Great Ideas. Then, the students need to make one simple poster of “Ideas Worth Spreading”. They learned from the evaluation that I gave before to make a picture of Ideas Worth Spreading using digital tools such as pixlr, picmonkey, paint and photoshop. After finishing their assignment, students submitted their works to Schoology. Students showed their bigger enthusiasm this week since they learn how to design their name card and ideas worth spreading assignment better.

I believe this is there is great power of  appreciation and evaluation! This make our students get more excited day by day!

Finally,I conclude these two weeks have become amazing design journey for our students. We’ve learnt that we do not only need to make our passion and idea. Yet, we need to  design our passion and ideas with great passion and ideas too!

Designing things is challenging but fun at the same time. It require consistent practice and sense of beauty. When you can design and visualize your passion and ideas, it will help you to understand and explore them better. Digital tools is one of the best supporting tools for your students to make beautiful and effective design. Also, make sure, you created LMS system to make it more efficient, effective, and go green!

I can’t wait for my students’ great ideas and passion ‘explosion’ in the following weeks!

    P.S I use Schoology too now (as I just came back teaching) along with other platforms, I found it useful. We could talk about this one day in a seminar/a paper in a journal, maybe? Or other than Schoology. Let’s see.
