The growth mindset is one of the most important characteristics that every teacher should have. To build growth mindset, you need to do these three things: learn, unlearn, and relearn.
Learn means teachers should have an open mind to update and adapt with the learner’s world. It means teachers need to collect information, browse new trends, and also seek how the students’ world change. It also means teachers should give the opportunity for students to give feedback, and teachers need to evaluate themselves how to improve their teaching and learning experiences. It also means teachers learn from one another, they actively ask and share with their fellow teachers to upgrade their knowledge and skills.
Then, unlearn is the hardest part of growth mindset because you should let go your old and traditional mindset by just stop learning or doing it. For example, you might ever learned that test is the best assessment to evaluate students understanding about a concept. It was assumed to be the only best tool you have to show whether your students get it or not. However, after you learn and relearn something from many resources and friends, you realize you need to unlearn that ‘test is the best assessment’ from your mind. It means you must change your old paradigm and dare to embrace new paradigm as replacement of new things. You can do it by giving your students opportunity to share their learning experiences in your class. Do they love test all the time? If the answer is no and you love test for assessment, it is time for you unlearn it and change it.
Subsequently, relearn means teachers should dare to open for something they have learned before, but maybe, it is undone or incomplete because you fail to make it. After you have unlearned something which means you have throw away your old thinking, it is important to relearn something new to replace your traditional thinking. For example, teachers might have relearn about blogging. However, you found it is too difficult to do so that you just did not make it. If you have growth mindset, you won’t give up when you failed. You keep pushing and keep learning them. It means your spirit of learning is not limited by any failure or bad experiences, you need to keep learning.
In practical, you could strengthen your growth mindset by giving your students the opportunity not only expressing their grades, but also feedback that could be useful for you to learn what you can learn, relearn, and unlearn from your students. You could put a table for learning for every time you assess your students, a table consist of 3 basic questions that we have discussed before. What I can learn from this assessment, What I can relearn from this assessment, and what I can unlearn from this assessment. For instances, you have test as your assessment for your students, you can fill ‘learn box’ with your students grade, comments, and feedback. After that, in the unlearn box, you could write your commitment to throw away your old thinking that could hamper you from creating better assessment next time. Finally, you could fill ‘relearn box’ with your reflection on it. It means you could write the strength and weakness and this assessment and how you will relearn something to make it better next time. By filling out the table every time you assess your students, you actually have planned for better teaching and learning in the future. You are growing your mind every time you teach and assess your students.
Therefore, your class is not only for your students, but for you as well. You’ve been part of learning experiences that you have designed for your students. At the end, it doesn’t matter how many years you have in your teaching experiences what matters is how many years you have learn, relearn, and unlearn from your teaching experiences.
