Animate The Lesson, Amplify The Passion

Why Animation?
One of my wildest dream as Geography teacher is to make my students work goes beyond four walls of classroom, and ultimately inspire people to love learning.
Animation is one of the greatest ways to combine unique passion, ideas, knowledge, and perspectives to produce visual story and information to many people. So, I decided to integrate animation into my Geography subject.
Explore Geography: The Origin of Universe, Solar System, and Earth (2 Weeks)
Here’s how I started the lesson:
I believe God is the One who created universe, solar system, and earth. He formed beautiful and amazing place for people to live and  I challenged my students to think and research how God created all those things? Did He just make it instantly? There’s several hypothesis and theory posed by scientist who have done tremendous research on how universe, solar system, and earth is designed in the first place.
To learn this hypothesis, we need to learn the process, key elements, and ingredients that are proposed by scientist. As Geography consist of two words: GEO means earth, GRAPHEIN means images, I believe we need to visualize the theory and hypothesis to make it more meaningful and relevant to students.
Animation Making (3-4 weeks)
To start making animation, I used some principles from TED Ed Lesson. TED-Ed’s commitment to creating lessons worth sharing is an extension of TED’s mission of spreading great ideas. Within TED-Ed’s growing library of lessons, you will find carefully curated educational videos, many of which represent collaborations between talented educators and animators nominated through the TED-Ed platform.
1Animation Pre-Production
After finishing explaining the basic theory, students formed group of four-five students to make different animation theory. During pre-production, students  will brainstorm and conceptualize idea, choose an animation technique, and designing the storyboard, sketch the animation.
In this project, most of my students choose Stop Motion as  Animation Techniques. To learn animation, you can also use  some these videos that explain how TED-Ed animators use visual metaphors to conceptualize animated lessons:
2. Animation Production
“While production is definitely the most fun part of making animation, it involves a LOT of patience!” TED Ed.
The production involves capturing the animation using camera and tripod. Students need to work together to design clear and relevant objects, arrange appropriate lighting and background, and move the objects based on storyboard.
Here are the best tips from TED Ed Animation to produce great animation is to:

  1. Set your camera up on a tripod using stop-motion software or application.
  2. Make sure that your camera is set to capture the highest quality photos possible.
  3. Remember to flip back and forth between pictures to check for continuity.

3. Animation Post Production
In Post Production, my students assembled images and video and design titles, texts, transitions, and sound effects. Then, my students shared the video in YouTube to collect likes, feedback, comments from their friends and family. By uploading their work into social media, students will:

  • Appreciate their own works and other students work
  • Learn from each other feedback and comment
  • Inspire people around the world for meaningful learning
  • Practice using YouTube and Social media for learning

To extend the learning process, you could also challenge your students to think deeper by challenging them to make TED Ed Lesson using their own video. TED Ed lesson has really cool features to engage your students to design quick quiz, dig deeper, and discuss topic related to their videos.

    it’s a very interesting story, Pak Steven! I really enjoy reading it 🙂 I was wondering, however, if the project is designed collaboratively with teachers (or a teacher) from other classes (art class, for example)?

    • I actually wanted to integrate this assignment with ICT lesson, yet the material they learned in this grade is different. I think it will be more powerful if teachers could design this project collaboratively.

        I agree. The next step for us to think of is how to eventually scale-up this approach to school-level, aligning curriculum with other subjects/classes so that our students can have more meaningful projects 🙂
